So we got to Des Moines at about 2 o’clock yesterday after a 12+ hour road trip from Nashville which included breakfast at IHOP and lunch at Arby’s, which it just about the most vegetarian unfriendly restaurant in the world. But anyway, I had been planning to volunteer for Kucinich’s campaign, but the Des Moines representative never called back. So instead, I decided to volunteer for the Edwards campaign, and was dropped off at an old warehouse that is now used as the headquarters for the steelworkers union. Kevin and I, along with about 8 other people, phone banked for about 2 hours. Most people that I called were polite, but a few hung up on me. I didn’t learn anything about Edwards that I didn’t already know, but it was interesting just to see how a campaign is run. Anyway, at about 7:30, just as we were about to leave, John and Elizabeth Edwards came into the campaign office to give a speech. I shook both their hands and spoke to them. It was quite possibly the most exciting moment of my life. Oh yeah, and I also met, and took a picture with, Tim Russert, so that was exciting.

After that, we all got onto the bus to head to Bill Clinton’s speech at 9, which was about an hour away. We stopped at McDonald’s, where I was unable again to eat anything, and then got back on the bus. As soon as we all sat down, we realized that it was 9 o’clock and we were about 50 minutes away. So we turned around and went back to the hotel. Kevin, Nick, and I tried to go to Starbucks, but it ended up being in a hospital and closed. So instead, we had an epic snowball fight that resulted in a couple of bruises and very cold hands and feet. It was totally worth it though.

This morning we had breakfast at the hotel and then got on the bus to get to our various campaign offices. Kevin and I decided that we would volunteer for Obama today because he was supposed to make an appearance . However,  when we got to the office, the volunteer organizer said that there were too many volunteers and not enough phones. So we got back on the bus and Kevin, Nick, Sarah, and I decided to switch to the Clinton campaign, where we just phone banked again. Then we came back to the hotel and went ice skating. Skating outside is so much better than skating in an arena, for the record.

Now I  have to go to an alumni speech about something or other, and then at 8ish I will be going to a speech by Bill and Hillary Clinton and Mr. and Mrs. Vilsack, the former governor and first lady of Iowa.

Well, I finally made it through exams (calculus was a bitch) and now have a pretty decent GPA, and I think I can bring it up quite a bit by the end of next semester. Anyway, I am now in PTC with the family. Not a lot has happened, but I did just finish organizing all of my books. I have all of my grandfather’s old philosophy books and novels, so my shelves look pretty awesome.

In other news, I will be leaving for Iowa in less than nine days, and I could not be more excited. I have been continuing to read the New York Times Caucus Blog daily, as well as several other blogs and newspapers in preparation for my trip. It’s about 15 degrees right now in Des Moines, and is supposed to warm up later this week. Hopefully, however, I will get to see some snow when I go.

Okay, so I think I’ve finally figured out my classes for next semester. Hopefully I will not be bumped from any, but que sera, sera.

JS 135 W– Intro to Hebrew Literature. I’m basically taking it to get my last W class out of the way, but with any luck, it will be interesting.

PSY 2102– Statistical Analysis. Blah…

PSY 2980– Directed Research. I will be continuing my work at TRIAD (treatment and research institute for autism spectrum disorders), which mainly involves coding and data entry/verification.

PSCI 103– Intro to Political Theory. Even though I am not the biggest fan of intro classes, the professor is supposed to be good, so we’ll see.

HIST 235– Modern France. My first history class at Vandy. I’m pretty pumped.

PHIL 213– Contemporary Philosophy. I am going to try to audit this class because I don’t really have time to do all the work involved, but I am really excited about taking a 200 level philosophy class.

From the looks of it, next semester promises to be more stimulating than this semester (which, let’s face it, how could it not be?), and for that I am extremely grateful.

I am posting even though I should be doing at least a million other things. Oh well. Last night, Kevin, BichLien, and I were talking about possibly applying for a Mayfield. We want our theme to be centered around breaking down gender lines; but, unfortunately, I don’t think that Vanderbilt would ever approve such a progressive project as it would require guys and girls to live together. I guess we could just apply and see what happens.

On another note, I looked up the international college rankings, and the University of Toronto is ranked the 24th best university in the world. I have no shot of getting in, even though I would literally give an arm and a leg to go there. I guess I will just have to start looking at other schools in Canada, because the thought of spending 5 additional years in the US makes me want to scream.

I don’t have any exciting Halloween plans today, but I dressed up like a robot last weekend and I went to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. First off, the robot costumes that John and I made were pretty damn 1337. Secondly, Rocky Horror was so much fun. I went with Wade, Kevin, Sarah, and Jessica, and everyone dressed up and looked really trashy. It was fantastic. We had to beg for tickets because the Belcourt had sold out about 45 minutes before we got there, but largely due to Wade’s amazing outfit, we managed to get just enough. All in all, it was a really fun pre-Halloween Halloween weekend.
